Generations is an American soap opera that premiered on NBC on March 27, 1989. The show follows the lives of two African-American families, the wealthy Whitmores and the working-class Marshalls, in the fictional Midwestern town of Birchfield.
The original cast of Generations included actors such as Vivica A. Fox, Kristoff St. John, Jonelle Allen, and Linda Gray. The show also introduced a number of up-and-coming actors, including Ricky Paull Goldin, who would go on to have a successful career in daytime television.
Over the years, Generations underwent numerous cast changes, with actors coming and going as the storyline required. Notable cast members during the show's run included Lynn Hamilton, who played matriarch of the Marshall family, and Dick Van Patten, who portrayed Whitmore patriarch Henry.
Generations continued to air on NBC for two years before being cancelled in 1991 due to low ratings. However, the show remains a landmark in daytime television history, as it was the first soap opera to feature a primarily African-American cast.
